How Occupational Therapists Can Do Less and Earn More: The Key to Building a Freedom-Based Online Business
Jun 13, 2025
Are you an occupational therapist feeling unfulfilled, overstretched, or ready to step into something bigger — without burning out?
Whether you’re dreaming of leaving the clinic or looking to launch your own online OT business, this post will show you how to work smarter, not harder — and create a high-ticket offer that sells with confidence and ease.
This article is based on Episode 89 of the OT Yourself to Freedom Podcast, and it’s a must-read if you’re ready to shift from hustle to flow and finally create a freedom-based lifestyle using your unique OT skills.
The Breakthrough Mindset: Do Less, Receive More
Let’s start with the truth no one talks about: success in business doesn’t come from doing more — it comes from doing the right things.
As occupational therapists, we’re often driven by a deep sense of service. We overdeliver. We overwork. And we constantly prove our worth through productivity. But what if true growth came from rest, creativity, and alignment — not hustle?
When I finally gave myself permission to pause — whether that was an afternoon nap, a walk in the sun, or time offline — everything shifted.
👉 My productivity increased
👉 My creativity surged
👉 My income soared
And that’s the energy I now help my clients step into — where ease and impact coexist.
Why So Many OT Entrepreneurs Burn Out Early
We’re wired to go, go, go. But being busy doesn’t mean being productive.
One of the biggest challenges I see in occupational therapists trying to start an online business is this: we try to force results through effort, rather than flow.
Early in my business, I used to panic in the quiet seasons — I’d dive into hustle mode and try to “fix” the slow period. Over time, I realised that business has natural rhythms. The quiet moments are essential for reflection, vision, and resetting your strategy.
Now, I embrace those seasons. And my business — and mental health — are better for it.
Automate, Simplify, and Stop Reinventing the Wheel
Every time I noticed myself repeating the same client instructions, marketing tasks or onboarding steps, I knew it was time to systemise or automate.
Too many OTs waste time doing everything manually. But if you’re serious about building a business that scales, you’ll need to:
- Create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Automate common client touchpoints
- Delegate or outsource sooner than you think
Whether it’s emails, appointment bookings, or content creation, there is always a way to simplify.
As Marie Forleo puts it: “Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, it comes from what you do consistently.”
The Subconscious Blocks That Keep You Stuck
Here’s what holds most OTs back from selling high-ticket offers or making consistent income: a deep belief that business has to be hard.
I hear it all the time:
- “I don’t feel comfortable charging that much.”
- “I need to give more value first.”
- “I worked so hard for this win…”
These are signs of receiving resistance — the subconscious belief that you must suffer or overdeliver in order to earn money.
But you don’t.
You’re allowed to make good money with ease.
You’re allowed to rest and receive.
You’re allowed to succeed without the struggle.
This shift in mindset is what unlocks high-ticket success — and it’s one of the biggest transformations I guide my clients through.
Structure = Freedom (Even for Creative OT Brains)
Let’s be honest — many of us in the OT profession have fast, creative minds. We’re visionary thinkers. But that can lead to chaos in business if it’s not grounded in structure and clarity.
I used to build a new spreadsheet every day (and never look at them again!). Now, I have repeatable systems in place, which means:
- My team knows exactly what to do
- My client experience is seamless
- My brain is free for big-picture thinking
You don’t need to be “naturally organised” to succeed. You just need to commit to the structure that supports your freedom.
Plan for Growth Like a 6-Figure OT CEO
You might still be in the early days of your business, but if you want to scale, you must think like a 6-figure OT entrepreneur.
That means:
- Building solid foundations
- Getting clear on your niche and offer
- Creating systems that can scale
- Believing that bigger success is inevitable
As Simon Sinek says: “Dream big. Start small. But most of all — start.”
