Breaking the Cycle: Why Occupational Therapists Self-Sabotage (and How to Stop)
As an Occupational Therapist (OT), you are a specialist at helping others overcome barriers to their independence and wellbeing. However, when it comes to your own professional growth — perhaps building that freedom-based online business you have dreamed of — do you find yourself hitting an invisible ceiling? It is a common phenomenon: you are on the verge of a breakthrough, you can feel the energy rising, and suddenly, everything retreats. You might even find yourself further back than where you started. This is the “beauty” of self-sabotage. Whilst it feels like a setback, it is actually a “you problem” — which means you are the only person with the power to solve it.
The Psychology of the “Safety” Trap
Our subconscious brains are hardwired for safety, and for the subconscious, safety is found in familiarity. Even if your current situation is frustrating or causes you pain, your brain knows that pattern and feels comfortable within it.When you attempt to break into a new income threshold or a more flexible lifestyle, your subconscious can become scared and confused. To “protect” you, it pulls you back into old, familiar habits. For OTs, this often manifests as:
- Procrastination: Putting off the vital tasks that would actually move your business forward.
- Perfectionism: Obsessing over minor details or needing a specific order before taking action.
- Analysis Paralysis: Refusing to take the first step until you can see every single step of the journey.
How to Recognise Your Sabotage Patterns
Awareness is the first stage of breaking any pattern. To gain a deeper understanding of what is holding you back, try these steps:
- Review Your History: Look back at goals you have tried to achieve over the past few years — whether financial, relationship-based, or career goals.
- Identify the “Moment”: Look at what happens just as you get close to your goal. Do you notice a pattern of “false starts” or unexpected “bad things” that cause you to give up mentally?
- Journal the Data: Put pen to paper to record these patterns. Even if it feels like external events are happening to you, writing them down helps secure the learning in your mind.
- Pre-empt the Saboteur: Think about your current business goals and imagine all the creative ways you might mess it up. By predicting these patterns, you can catch yourself before you act on them.
From Saboteur to Magician
In the realm of shadow work, the opposite of the Saboteur is the Magician. Whilst the Saboteur pulls you back into the past, the Magician allows you to be playful, creative, and free. When you lean into this “light” side and find your flow, you can actually “collapse time” and achieve results in magical timeframes.
